Common Core for Homeschoolers?

You may be asking why we would be  interested in the common core standards if we are homeschooling.  Well there are a few reasons...

First of all let me just say I love the freedom we have homeschooling to teach what we want, when we want.  A method that best suits our children.   But, I also like structure.

With that in mind I think as a homeschooling parent I also want the very best for my children and want to make sure I am teaching them the things they need to know for the future.  That is one of the reasons I have been looking at the Common Core Standards.

Remember those books "What your 5th grader needs to know"?  (There´s one for every grade!)  The Common Core Standards are a guide line like those books provide for parents & educators.  To give us a standard to assess our students, to make  sure we didn´t miss something:)

So as I´ve been putting my curriculum together, I have also been looking at these standards.  I also wanted to include them in my curriculum so the teacher would know what goal is being met.

Believe it or not I´ve found a few things that are interesting and have started implementing some new information for our children to learn.  Sometimes it can be a headache reading the Common Core Standards I must admit...but I have been really enjoying some of the educational  materials that public school teachers are creating too!

So whether you are a homeschooling educator or a public/private school educator I think the Common Core Standards can have some positive benefits for us all.  I want to say a special thank you to all the teachers out there who love what they do and make learning fun!
