UberSmart Software & FREE math fact worksheets - A TOS Review

UberSmart Software is a downloadable software program that you can use on almost any computer. This software is for Windows 7, 8, XP and Vista ONLY.  Sorry no apple computers with this one.  On a positive note, you don't have to be on-line for the kids to use it.

Geared for grades K-6, but younger or older kids can also benefit from this software. It offers multiple levels of math fact learning. Included in the software are Dot Cards (like adding domino faces in the picture above), Keyboard Entry (Ten-Key Numbers in the picture below), Flash Cards (add and subtract through 9, multiplication and division  to 12).

I received UberSmart Math Facts, for the purpose of this review, to use with my own students. All I needed to do was download the software, input our user name/passwords, and then we were ready to start. My two younger children, ages 5 and 8, loved using it for mastery of their addition/subtraction facts. They each started at 0 for their addition facts and quickly moved forward. They had an immediate sense of accomplishment right from the start. More then a few times I heard them yelling, "hey mom, look I mastered 6 ...7...8...!" Since the kids love to get on the computer, this has been a great resource for them to focus on math facts in addition to their daily math work.

My older kids ages 10,12, & 13 wanted to jump on and give it a whirl.  They loved the challenge of beating the clock and would boast of how fast they master their 0's. I am so glad they had fun with it:)  They also enjoyed trying to master their speed with all the higher multiplication sets as well as their number keyboarding skills.

As a teacher here are some of the things that I really liked about this software.  First of all, it works just like a set of flashcards with the student or teacher increasing their speed.  Also, I could change the time limit for each set, to challenge them to work a little bit harder.  Something I especially liked is that this software is clean and effective.  No extra agenda and funny animation - just math flash cards.  Since the kids can use it independently with out need for supervision or help, it frees me up and gives me a report to assess my student's progress and needs.   Finally, they offer FREE math facts worksheets that compliment the program:)

Sharing Great Ideas for Summer!

Are you getting ready for summer? We are:)

Here, in Panama, the rainy season is just starting! While some of you are gaining more sunshine we seem to be loosing it!

Things have been winding down a bit here, so we are looking for some fun things to do! I have also started assessing my curriculum this past year and my students progress so I can start planning again!

I listed below a few fun and different things we have done for the end of the year and summer. I hope you find something useful!

k-1st Summer Fun Measurement Data Weight Scale Math Centers Common Core

This is a fun way to learn how to use a scale! My kids loved it and I´m sure yours will too!

You can either build the scale yourself for the kids to use or let them help you and build one for themselves to take home- it´s super easy and takes less then 15 min!










Then just print out the colorful summer paper weights, laminate if you want with the mats and your all ready to go!

There are also fun summer worksheets that are all common core aligned and reinforce all that measuring and weighing.

I also included Common Core Standard posters for you to reference and bulletin boards.

I Can Toucan - Rainforest Birds Craftivity, Book, Coloring Sheets, and Song

Here is a picture of the newest update I made to this product! If you have purchased this, please download it again to get the mask templates! This fun toucan mask was made out of foam. It could also be made out of card stock or construction paper!

This is a cute Little Book, Craftivity, and Song I made called “I can toucan”. There are also three different style Toucan posters and coloring sheets included.

It can be used separately or combined with the other activities.

Included in the book are: tying shoes, getting dressed nice, eating fruit, eating eggs, eating

nuts, standing on tippy toes, listening quietly, being giving & kind, hopping, and sitting under a tree -Just like a toucan!:)

The final page says “..I Can toucan & you can too!”

The toucan craftivity and song instructions are also included

with paper cut out templates for the toucan craftivity. Suggestions for the song include pretend body movements like pretending to tie your shoe and whispering quietly with finger to lips during that part of the song. ( of course real props are fun too or just use whats fun for your little ones:)

We sang a Little song to the tune of “Good Night Ladies” using the words of this book, colored in the pages, put a

little handle on it with a pipe cleaner, and did the paper craftivity.

We also used this to reinforced positive behaviors

in a fun way and to teach our little ones a little bit more about what they have in common with rainforest Toucans!

There are 4 colored pages (2 book pages per sheet) and 7 black & white pages (14 book pages) just waiting to be

colored in! With a total of 22 possible book pages there are many different ways you could use these. All in one day,

over a period of time, coloring sheets, etc…

To keep my kids engaged in learning I try to make it fun!

 (Some of the activities I share are a part of a product that I sell in my stores. If you are interested in them, please click on the picture to go to the store link)

Here are some ideas that work wonderfully:)

1. Games:

Flyswatter-

for math facts, alphabet facts, sight words, foreign language facts, etc.

Players lay a fact card down, say the correct answer and swat it!  The first to swat it wins the fact (works with any flash card or manipulative...letters, shapes, etc.)!   Winner with the most facts in the end wins!


Manipulative Eggs: 

1-3 player game. First player takes an egg, reads the fact on the egg, and uses the manipulatives in the egg to find the answer. Second player checks the answer. (In the picture below the game is used for multiplication facts and a calculator is used to check the answers)



Each player gets their own set of eggs with manipulatives inside all held together in their own (soap) dish! (All from the dollar store!!!)



Manipulative Game in a bag of gelle:

Choose any manipulative facts your kids need to learn and add it to a bag of gelle (cheap hair gelle from the dollar store!) Each player takes a turn finding their fact and records it on a recording sheet (paper, dry erase board, etc.). In the picture below there is dice in the bag along with addition math fact families. The player rolls the dice answer(5) and finds the math fact numbers that can make the answer(4+1=5). This is a great tactile activity to reinforce any fact your kiddos need to learn!



Go fish or Matching game using spoons or cards:

Use facts of your choice and have the players take turns asking for the match that they need. Use either as a go fish or matching game.

In the picture below each player takes turns matching the uppercase letter to the lowercase letter. Use any color spoons along with clear spoons.



Another example is using facts to match to the correct answer on a mat or chart. Below the students take turns with two different letters to blend a word. They can then record their answers on a recording sheet.



The example below is a matching game with cards. The students take turns matching the correct Spanish Word to the Correct English word. The cards are also color coded.


or matching the number card to the number on the mat. (This can be done in any language to practice vocabulary or number order)

2. Art projects & hands on activities:
Use play-doe to make words, numbers, letters, shapes, etc.



Singing to learn a lesson



Reenacting stories or facts from a lesson using masks (learning about rain forest toucans)



puppets (retelling a story)



Making edible models of different concepts:


Below the kids used cheese balls and tooth picks to show the parts and sizes of each part of an atom.



and then made a model of each...when they were done they could eat it if they wanted!



Chemical reactions and Color Wheel lessons: Use colored vinegar with an eyedropper to drop different colors into baking soda.



Art: 

 Use art when teaching concepts and you need your students to sit quietly and listen. When children use the right side of their brain (creativity) it has a calming and quieting effect. I allow my students to work on art while we are discussing or learning something new. It keeps them quietly busy and engaged.


The art below is a mixed media using oil pastels and water colors. They were specifically drawn using oil pastels crayons and then filled in using old markers dipped in water(watercolor.



This is a drawing with a 3D effect, using straight lines and curved lines. To do this have your students trace their hand or draw any object on a piece of paper. Then draw straigh lines across the paper using a curved line over their drawing (the fingers and hand).




Finding Secret codes:

Use hidden codes to teach subjects your students need to learn. I taught my students about the Egyptian alphabet using the activity below.


The students were given a name code in Egyptian hieroglyphics along with the code. They had to decipher the code to find whose name card they had. If you would like to do this with your students you can find everything you need here.



Here is a freebie that teaches the ancient Hebrew letters through their pictorial meaning. The students have to find the hidden ancient Hebrew letter in the picture! This is included in my Ancient Hebrew Civilizations, Root Words, Acrostic Poems Unit- common core unit.  I hope that you found something in my examples to inspire you to make learning fun for your students.
