Fascinating Biology {A TOS Review}

This past month we had the opportunity to use and review Fascinating Biology.  This is one of the middle school/high school courses offered from the online company Fascinating Education. Fascinating Education has three different science curriculum that they offer:  Biology, Chemistry and Physics.  Each course is available with one year access for $79 per course.

When I was asked to review this science course with my children, I was very excited.  This course did not look like your typical high school science course.  It appeared to be more then an overview,  diving into the meat of the Biology.  Understanding and grasping the concepts of mitosis, meiosis, and even the ATP cycle in high school, is very important if a student wants to pursue further science courses later on.  This course looked like something that would benefit my science oriented high schooler, as well as my two middle school children.

Let me just interject my personal experience with you.  This negative experience is something I do not want to see repeated in my own children. Even though I enjoyed science myself in high school and graduated with a 3.9 GPA, ( a very long time ago:); I was not adequately prepared to handle the fast pace of university science classes.

After my first semester of Biology and Chemistry courses, I was failing miserably.  (Don't worry I didn't drop out of college all together, but it did take me 6 years before I graduated with my BSRN degree!)  This was not a fun, nor inexpensive eye opener for me at the time. It was very discouraging to say the least. I think the reason I did not succeed initially in my university science courses, was because I could not keep up with the pace of the classes.

I did not have enough of a grasp of the foundational concepts to master the more advanced science material.

Should my children choose to enroll in higher level science courses, I do not want them to have this experience and be at a disadvantage like I was.   Because of the experience I had, I feel it is very important to give my younger students a firm foundation in all of the subjects they study.

So, did this on-line course prove to be the solution?  At this point in my review I can honestly say I think so:) It has a large amount of advanced material.  Combining this course with labs and interactive notebooks will help my kids get a firm grasp on the basic concepts.  That is exactly what I plan to do.   As an additional benefit, I have been learning a ton as well!

Although Lesson 1 is not from a Biblical creation perspective, it was a good conversation starter to talk about the common scientific view of the origin of life.  We then moved on to lesson 2, chemistry review.

I thought we would just wiz right through chemistry since we have already completed a middle school chemistry course.  Nope, they failed the chemistry test and were pretty discouraged.  That told me that my students chemistry knowledge was not sufficient.  Really, some of these concepts are very abstract - like molecules and atoms.  I mean you can't even see them, right?!  I really think it is hard for many students to grasp these concepts.  After seeing my kids response to lesson 2, I then contacted Fascinating Education to share my concern with continuing the course.  They were very supportive and didn't want my children to be discouraged because they had failed the test.  They happily offered us the chemistry pre-course to help my children succeed. Can you say, "awesome customer service!"?

We then preceded to take the "chemistry pre-course for biology".  This course was a perfect review of elements and molecular bonds.  The course is laid out so simply with photos to help them understand the elements on a more day to day basis.  Each element was outlined briefly, showing where we see it in our world around us.  After lesson 1, we took the test (there is a test after each lesson). Their average score was 80% - woo hoo - success.  This boosted their understanding and morale - they were more willing to continue on.:)

Below is a picture of the Fascinating Chemistry dashboard.  This is exactly what our Chemistry pre-course dashboard looks like.  We have been working our way thorough all of the lessons and have been getting in depth teachings about molecules and bonding.

Dr. Margulies has a very soothing voice and talks at a slow understandable pace.  Although the lessons are engaging, the visual pictures in the scripted presentation need to move at a much faster pace.  This is only thing I think this program could improve on.   Students in this fast paced technology world are accustomed to being visually stimulated constantly.  If visual images that flashed before the students eyes,  were about 10 seconds apart, I think it would be able to keep the students attention event though the subject is complex.  Overall, I think this a very well thought out and in depth science program.  I don't have a high school AP course outline in front of me, but if I were to guess I would say that the content exceeds the AP level of information.

UberSmart Software & FREE math fact worksheets - A TOS Review

UberSmart Software is a downloadable software program that you can use on almost any computer. This software is for
Windows 7, 8, XP and Vista ONLY.  Sorry no apple computers with this one.  On a positive note, you don't have to be on-line for the kids to use it.

Geared for grades K-6, but younger or older kids can also benefit from this software. It offers multiple levels of math fact learning. Included in the software are Dot Cards (like adding domino faces in the picture above), Keyboard Entry (Ten-Key Numbers in the picture below), Flash Cards (add and subtract through 9, multiplication and division  to 12).

I received UberSmart Math Facts, for the purpose of this review, to use with my own students. All I needed to do was download the software, input our user name/passwords, and then we were ready to start. My two younger children, ages 5 and 8, loved using it for mastery of their addition/subtraction facts. They each started at 0 for their addition facts and quickly moved forward. They had an immediate sense of accomplishment right from the start. More then a few times I heard them yelling, "hey mom, look I mastered 6 ...7...8...!" Since the kids love to get on the computer, this has been a great resource for them to focus on math facts in addition to their daily math work.

My older kids ages 10,12, & 13 wanted to jump on and give it a whirl.  They loved the challenge of beating the clock and would boast of how fast they master their 0's. I am so glad they had fun with it:)  They also enjoyed trying to master their speed with all the higher multiplication sets as well as their number keyboarding skills.

As a teacher here are some of the things that I really liked about this software.  First of all, it works just like a set of flashcards with the student or teacher increasing their speed.  Also, I could change the time limit for each set, to challenge them to work a little bit harder.  Something I especially liked is that this software is clean and effective.  No extra agenda and funny animation - just math flash cards.  Since the kids can use it independently with out need for supervision or help, it frees me up and gives me a report to assess my student's progress and needs.   Finally, they offer FREE math facts worksheets that compliment the program:)

UberSmart Math Facts Review

This software can be used with eight or more students making it great for any classroom setting.  Valued at $24.95 for standard home use.  If you decide to buy it before Sept. 30, 2014 you can get 30% off using the code  "v4 Early Bird"  You can also try it out now using their  30 day FREE trial.

If you are interested in this software be sure to check out what other members of the crew had to say about it.

Wizzy Gizmo Audio Drama ~ A TOS Review

The Audio Drama One:  Who Created Everything?, is the first of two series that are available in book form.  I received their first and only audio drama CD  for the purpose of this review. There are two books based on the Old Testament stories and a set of cards that teach about the books of the New Testament that you can also find on the Wizzy Gizmo website.

"Who Created Everything"  from Wizzy Gizmo is an audio drama CD.   It is a 36 minute Bible drama from Genesis chapter 1 that retails for $14.99.    Wizzy Gizmo is a character in the story that invents gizmos. With his gizmovision machine, the cast of characters are able to transport themselves into a book of the Bible.  The story begins with a professor and a group of kids that travel back in time via a time machine.  Interspersed between talking kids and the professor are catchy songs that go along with the story.

The cast of characters includes Wizzy Gizmo, Qwacky, Pepe, Summer, Thomas, Eli, and Olive.  Here is a list of the 22 tracks included on the CD so you can have a better understanding of what is included.

1.    Wizzy Gizmo Theme Song
2.    Gizmovision
3.    Day One of Creation
4.    Day Two of Creation
5.    Day Three of Creation Part 1
6.    Where are the Stars?
7.    Day Three of Creation Part 2
8.    Mango Oh How I love You!
9.    Strawberry Summer
10.  Day Three of Creation Part 3
11.  Day Four of Creation
12.  Day Five of Creation
13.  Day Six of Creation
14.  Worthy are You
15.  Giz Quiz
16.  Third Heaven
17.  Everything
18.  Let There be Light
19.  Sunrise to Space
20.  Under Water Adventure
21.  Creatures of the World
22.  Go Forth

According to the CD sleeve all scripture is taken from the New American Standard Bible.

The age range for this particular audio drama is for ages 4-12.  Younger kids will probably enjoy this CD and go "along for the ride" due to the quick paced story line and songs.  The songs have a contemporary sound to them and are reminiscent of other popular Christian rock audio dramas I have heard over the years.  Would you like to listen to some sample songs and stories to see if this is for you?  Then hop on over and take a listen!

When this CD arrived in the mail we immediately popped it in to listen to it.  My kids 5, 8, and 10 were immediately interested.  We listened to it until they were "done" listening.  We only made it through about 1/2 of the CD because the kids thought some of the acting was a bit forced and they didn't like it.  We are also not big on rock music so it was a little loud and "trendy" for our taste.

Veritas Self Paced History - New Testament, Greece and Rome - A TOS Review

The New Testament Greece and Rome from Veritas Press is a Self-Paced History course.  It is an on-line full year class that retails for $199.00.    I was given this course for the purpose of this review, that can be accessed  immediately after your registration.  Once you have registered for the class and created a student account, you can begin using the course.   The  Veritas Press Self-Paced History: New Testament, Greece and Rome course is video based;  full of history, games, tests, and jokes all taught by two humorous actors. The two actors are "brother and sister", dressed in character for the time period, who are aided by talking statues who teach students history.

There are also New Testament, Greece and Rome flashcards that accompany the course and are mailed to you.  The flash cards are retailed at $19.95.  The course is paced to correspond to the flash cards that are a timeline of history to memorize.  There is also a constant memory song that is played throughout the course to aid in the student's memorization of the timeline of events.  There are 5 lessons for each card, that can take about 15 minutes to complete followed by a quiz.  There is also a list of books that coincide with the course that are optional.  We have not yet purchased any books and have not felt that we are missing anything by not reading them.  Although my children love reading and cannot wait for their book order to come in the mail:)

Students can work at their own pace covering 32 historical events.   The time period covered in this particular course is from 2200 BC to 476 AD.  The course begins with the Minoan culture paralleling the Biblical History of Abraham.  Students have a full year to complete the course but since it is self paced they can easily move through it at a faster pace.  My children loved it so much they would complete multiple lessons in one sitting!

Veritas Press is a classical Christian educational program that offers 5 different levels of Self-Paced Courses.  The five levels are:
-Old Testament and Ancient Egypt
-New Testament, Greece and Rome
-Middle Ages, Renaissance and Reformation
-Explorers to 1815
-1815 to Present

All of the Self-Paced History Lessons include:

-160  Lessons (30-50 minutes each)
-32  Historical people or events
-Educational games
-Historical characters in costume
-Videos
-on-line lessons for one year

course

The age range for this particular course if for grades 2nd - 6th.   My 9th grade son has also been enjoying the lessons even though he says some of the questions are "to easy" for him.  My other three children (ages 10 - 13) used it every day for the last month.  They would log into their on-line student account and spend over an hour doing the course.  I was very impressed at how the course captured their attention because they were only required to spend 15-30 minutes a day!

Since this is a Christian based course it does touch on Biblical verses and history, although that is not it's main subject. There are 31 lessons that cover the history of the Minoans, Mycenaean, The Trojan War, Phoenicians, Division of the tribes of Israel, Homer and Greek Mythology, Greek Olympics, The founding of Rome,  and The colonization of Greece.  Students are quizzed on historical facts through interactive games such as the labyrinth, shooting ships, battle game, a memorization song, and shipwrecked quiz.  Every section finishes with a test to test the student's recollection of the facts they have studied.

In my opinion this is a great course.  This course requires the students to memorize chronological history in an engaging way.  I really like how it is paced with games and a quiz every fifth lesson.  I have been pleasantly surprised at how much the kids are learning as well as hearing them singing the song throughout the day!  I also really liked the fact that the students could access the course at their own leisure and pace.

The only part I did not like about the course was the inability of the students to retake a test or quiz.  Once a test or quiz is taken the grade is final.  Even if they mistakenly hit the wrong key or did not take it seriously.  It would be nice if the teacher (me) had the option to allow students to retake the test or quiz so I could measure their mastery of the subject.  If you are interested in this course you can try out the free 2 week trial to make sure it is a good fit for your students.

You can connect with Veritas Press through the following sites or view samples of their self-paced courses on their website:
